Understanding the key value of Google and leveraging on that value using SEO

What do you want – FREE or PAID ?

The left of Google (except the sponsored links that sometimes appear at the top) are free. It is called Organic search results. You can only appear on the first page of organic results if your site is deemed to be in the top 10 sites for a specific keyword.

Google determines a site by the VALUE it gives to Googleís viewers.  The site with the best value content (most and best formatted information for the keyword selected + the largest number and quality of links TO your site) will ëwiní the ranking game.

Difference in traffic for left (free) and right (paid) of Google

If you appear in the organic or paid results anywhere on the first page of Google you will get traffic if there are enough people searching on the keyword typed.

The question is ñ how much more does the left hand side (free organic results) get compared to the right hand side (paid results ñ Adwords)?

The number is simple – SIX.  Six times!  On average six times more people click on the links on the left compared to the links on the right. So if you are getting ok or good results from your Adwords campaign, imagine the results you would get from the organic free results when you can get around SIX times more traffic. This figure does not take into account the fact that you are not always showing up on the right hand side.

Trust and Google endorsement

Everyone knows that the right hand side of Google or sponsored results is paid advertising. If you are number one on the right everyone knows you have just paid more. Now thatís not strictly true, yet in peopleís minds it is.

On the left (organic), they know you have to be good to appear on the first page. When you appear on the first page you inherit a natural trust and endorsement from Google. People trust Google so they then trust you. Traffic coming from organic vs paid results is not the same. Organic results come with a solid endorsement in peopleís minds from Google. If you are number 1 on the left then people think that you are number 1 in the Market place ñ which is often true.

Is SEO an Expense vs Investment

If you pay for advertising on Google you are paying BEFORE you get results. Admittedly ñ if you site is good, and there are enough people clicking your adverts, you will get results; yet you really have an expense. Stop paying and see what happens to your traffic if you think this is not the case. You are also paying to have people visit your store. Doing this for the short-term can be a good idea but in the long run being on the left is the place to be where you pay nothing for your traffic once you have invested a modest amount to get there.

Can you secure the top spots on the paid result all the time? Of course not ñ unless you are very popular and you pay a lot! Even if you pay more, you cannot guarantee getting the top spots on the right. And as soon as you displace someone else from the top spots they will simply outbid you to get their spot back ñ then the game begins! Google has to rotate the sites because people are paying. Everyone is bidding for the top spots so Google rotates them. You are always bidding against hundredís of others for the same space.

On the left hand side though, in the organic results, you can LOCK OUT your competition by securing top spots and maintaining them. Not only can you take just one position ñ with our monthly maintenance service we expect to see you rise to number one (like many of our clients have done) and ALSO, over time with the specific strategies we use, to take over multiple positions on the first page for the keywords in your market place. This makes it VERY HARD for your competitors to displace you as long as you continue to maintain your position and do work each month to maintain and build your ranking. There are only 10 spaces. Even today very few people (including your web designer) know much about SEO. It is still possible in most industries in many countries to corner the market with a modest SEO investment. Tomorrow – well good luck. If you are not thinking ahead and securing those limited spots then you will be forced to struggle on the right and pay like everyone else ñ paying more and more as

Most people are like you ñ they want to always be visible on the page when potential customers are visiting Google. Have you noticed though, if you refresh the page, the results on the left stay the same but the paid ones on the left change a lot? Your site may have disappeared completely or dropped down the list. Organic results hardly ever change, certainly not if you refresh the page on the same day a thousand times! Paid results often change every time you refresh the page.

There are only a limited number of customers searching each day

If you only appear to 5% of them you are missing out big time! On the left if 1000 people are searching you are displayed to 1000 people ñ this is important ñ not 50, as may be the case on the right! Imagine your sales results when you have all the extra traffic!

Also remember that if you are only using pay per click and are not ranking on the left for keywords in your industry it is not just like having a shop saying ‘gone for lunch’ it is like not even being there. Your current and future potential customers are never exposed to you. Even if you appear on the left and you are not clicked on that much, at least your potential customers see you. You are still present in the market place ready to attract future business.

So if you are getting good results from Adwords paid search results today, imagine the results you would get from being on the left and for virtually free. That is why it is an investment ñ you will get better results and you will not have to do much (except maintain your SEO position) to keep getting a return on your investment.
