PPC vs SEO
When we visit clients the first question we ask is “where do you look on Google, on the left or the right?” The answer 98 times out of a 100 is of course the left. We often joke with them about why they are working on the right and not focusing on the left where everyone is looking. This same statistic plays itself out in the global search engine market place.
There are pro’s and con’s with both SEO and PPC. To get the best solution the obvious answer is to us both! In general we find that PPC will deliver around 20% of a clients search engine customers where SEO will deliver around 80%. PPC though is super cheap because for a few dollars you can test the market to see the response where SEO is more investment focused.
PPC vs SEO – Some key differences
- PPC users pay for every click even though the visitor may not become a customer SEO traffic is free – in that you never pay for each visitor
- PPC is instant where SEO takes time. But like a good bottle of wine the time is worth the wait for the better results
- PPC budgets can start at $100 or less where SEO starts at least in the $1000 range. SEO is for those who KNOW the value
search engines can offer them so they invest knowing the results WILL come and their investment will pay off with a huge ROI - PPC is here today gone tomorrow – in that when you stop paying your ads disappear. SEO results can remain for weeks if not months even without any further ‘maintenance’
- PPC is excellent for short marketing campaigns to obtain instant results where SEO is very slow off the mark in this area. Marketing managers that think three to four month ahead though can get the SEO ready for a launch into a new market or country
- PPC and SEO conversion rates tend to be about the same but at the back of the persons mind is always the thought that the SEO result can be trusted more
- PPC and SEO can both be outsourced
- PPC is very easy to do yourself if you have the time where SEO is a lot more complex to learn and get results
- Your cost per visitor is usually much lower with SEO than PPC over a period of time so SEO is more cost effective but PPC is cheaper at the beginning than SEO
So at the end of the day - as we said at the start – the trick is to do both if you have the budget. Smart businesses use PPC to discover the best traffic keywords then they do search engine optimisation for those keywords so that they appear in the organic results on the left.

Earlier this year, I took a look at the Garmin Oregon 400t rugged outdoor GPS unit.
