If you know the keywords you want to rank for your life is easy. Like us we want to show up on the first page of Google.com.sg for specific keywords that will deliver us new clients for the services that we offer. If however you are wanting to find high traffic keywords that other people may have overlooked you need to use some specific tools and techniques.

I will share some simple easy to use free tools soon but first let me tell you a story. Five months ago I performed a SEO experiment to discover a high traffic keyword that would deliver high monthly traffic flows for free. I decided to start from scratch using a WordPress blog on a new web domain. I discovered a keyword with a lot of traffic and not a lot of strong competition, and then I created a domain name with the keyword name.

As you may know it is not easy to rank high in Google for a new website never mind number one but that was the target I set myself to see how long it would take. Number 1 in Google.com was not enough though. I wanted to also get number 1 in Yahoo! and MSN.

Five months after creating the website it was not only No1 in Yahoo! (took 6 weeks) and MSN (took 3 weeks) but also Google.com. The site has remained at number one since it ranked there and has never budged once. Right now the site receives a whopping 10,000 unique visitors a month for a very silly keyword! As in many things Internet based Google is the answer! Google has a free keyword research tool that anyone can use that is attached to their Adwords system. Just type: “google keyword research tools” into Google and you will see some great tools such as the Adwords Keyword Tool. You will also come across a great SEO website article as well when you do this. Another superb tool is Wordtracker. They have a paid service but they also offer a free keyword research tool. Once you get the keyword ideas go and see how competitive they are. To do this use the following commands in Google :

allintitle:
allinurl:

So to find out how competitive the search term keyword research is in Google.com.sg I would type (in Google.com.sg) > allintitle:keyword research and it would tell me that there are only 727 direct competitors where the page title includes the keyword.

Using allinurl: would tell us that there are only 952 pages in with the keyword as part of the url name. From this simple research you will discover both traffic flows and competition levels.
