Google Shares More Clues
Understanding Google algorithms is obviously a constant chase for what Google could be thinking at a particular time. In fact, we were thinking amongst ourselves, why did Google name it Panda? What was the relation of this new algorithm update to this charming black-eyed bear?
First, it is beneficial for us to understand where this new algorithm update takes off. In an interview with Wired, Google’s Matt Cutts and Amit Singhal, the two most influential people behind the LINK:Google Panda algorithm update: http://www.seo-magic-webs.com, were noted as saying that the old algorithm, Caffeine, helped speed up indexing of both good and bad content. So this new update filtered content further by choosing good content over bad, shallow ones.
In fact, after Panda was launched, people generally agreed that the results are better, but not perfect. For instance, people wanting to search government sites are able to find these sites on top of article “farming” sites the likes of Ehow.com, Suite 101, or EzineArticles.
According to Cutts and Singhal, prior to the Panda launch, Google sent out testers to check people’s trust in certain websites. The testers apparently asked questions like “would I trust my credit card information on this site?” or “Would I trust the treatment this site recommends for my 10-month-old baby?” The testers also checked for the number of ads seen on a site and whether or not they provided verifiable information in an authoritative manner.
Singhal said that because of this, Google was actually able to come up with a clearer definition of what was low quality. “We actually came up with a classifier to say, okay, IRS or Wikipedia or New York Times is over on this side, and the low-quality sites are over on this side,” Cutts added. “And you can really see mathematical reasons…”
Still, people wondered why a content farming site like Ehow.com is still ranking for medical content such as level 4 brain cancer even if the article is written by an author without the proper medical credentials. At this, Google explains that they also check for the quality of the comments certain posts generate.
Google Panda
So how does this relate to optimisation now? Google says that this new Google Panda algorithm update can still be gamed. And if you want to play the game, then you should play with only the juicy stuff – good quality content that people can trust.
This, to us, is why it’s been called Google Panda. After all, the Panda climbs the top branches of a bamboo tree to get only the best, freshest, and juiciest leaves to eat. It makes perfect sense that Google will put high rankings to websites that offer only the best, freshest, and juiciest quality information that is useful to people.
