Improve Yahoo search ranking
To improve search ranking in Yahoo you need to know a few tips. Google is very different than Yahoo in how it ranks websites.
Yahoo used to be the No1 search engine so ranking in Yahoo used to be very important. Today though, Yahoo has dropped to being the No2 search engine and is fast being overtaken by Baidu. However in Asia it is still worth ranking in Yahoo because very high number of internet users use and prefer Yahoo over Google. In Singapore for example over 20 percent of your free search traffic can come from Yahoo so it is still worth spending the time to rank high in Yahoo.
When we give potential clients a quote for SEO ranking we tend to just quote for Google. Many of our prospective clients ask us about ranking also in Yahoo. We are probably doing ourselves out of business because our standard response is that they will normally get their Yahoo ranking for free but that it will take about an extra three months over Google. The reason for this is that we only use Google as a benchmark to measure our ranking results but we are a search engine optimisation company so our work is effective for all search engines. Having said this, there are some additional things that will speed up your Yahoo ranking. If you follow these simple tips you will improve your search ranking in Yahoo for sure.
Tips to improve search ranking in Yahoo
Backlinks – lots of them – quality is not that important!
Yahoo loves back links and is not that fussy when it comes to their quality. Google is super fussy about back link quality so a site that has thousands of back-links can outrank a site with less in Yahoo but Google is a different story. Yahoo is more about quantity than quality. This website is currently sitting at No3 in Google for the keyword SEO in Singapore (our main base), but in Yahoo we are sitting at position 9. Above us are several SEO companies that have worked hard to create massive numbers of low quality back links – and in some cases have purchased them. In Google we are only outranked by two major competitors that we have not been able to shift, yet in Yahoo, these two same top SEO companies are not even on the 1st page! Go figure that! One of the companies that is right at the top of Yahoo for the keyword SEO rose very fast on Google and took our position. They came out of nowhere. We recovered our third position in 2 hours (more on how to do this in another blog) and they dropped to position 4. They are now no where to be seen on the 1st page of Google in pages from the web with a massive 414 MILLION competing pages. Google kicked them off the first page after about a month – probably once it had caught up with all their poor quality links. This company is probably using the same techniques that got it to the top of Yahoo with their own clients – and their clients will experience the same thing as they have with Google – a hard kick in the pants down the ranking results table. Their clients may do well with their Yahoo ranking but will struggle with their Google ranking which will deliver a whopping FIVE times the result for them. Use XML
Remember Yahoo is slow and ‘lazy’ so you have to assist it by making its life easier. Both Google and Yahoo love XML site maps but Google does not rely on them where Yahoo being a bit more ‘lazy’ than Google does. Yahoo uses the XML site maps a lot more than Google to tell it what new pages have been added or updated on the site. Adding a XML site map to your website is a must along with a robots.txt file to tell search engine spiders where your XML site map is located and is basic SEO. However with Yahoo being super ‘lazy’, if you take the extra step and create a Yahoo Sitemaster account – http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com (start first with a creating a standard Yahoo account) – and then if you let Yahoo know the site map location, this will ‘wake it up’ and speed up the ranking process. Otherwise Yahoo can take an extra three months over Google to rank a page – that’s a long time in the SEO world. If you add a WordPress blog ( a huge SEO blast – contact us for our great rates to install and support) then you can also apply for a Yahoo API code through the Site Explorer and then you can add this to you WordPress blog so that every time you post a new blog, Yahoo is Pinged by WordPress with an XML file to tell it there is an update.
